Disc Bulge / Prolapse Overview
What is a Disc Bulge/Prolapse?
- Disc Bulge: This occurs when the outer layer of the intervertebral disc weakens but does not rupture, causing the disc to protrude out of its normal boundary.
- Disc Prolapse (Herniated Disc): In this condition, the inner gel-like substance (nucleus pulposus) of the disc leaks out through a tear in the outer layer (annulus fibrosus), potentially compressing nearby nerves.
Symptoms
- Pain: Can range from mild to severe and may be localized or radiate to other parts of the body, such as the arms or legs.
- Numbness and Tingling: Often felt in areas served by the affected nerves.
- Muscle Weakness: Can occur in the muscles served by the affected nerves.
- Reduced Mobility: Difficulty in moving due to pain and stiffness.
