Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)

Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of chronic inflammatory arthritis primarily affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to pain and stiffness. It can also affect other joints and organs. Over time, AS can cause the vertebrae to fuse, resulting in a rigid spine.

Symptoms:

• Chronic back pain and stiffness
• Pain and swelling in other joints, such as hips, shoulders, and knees
• Fatigue
• Reduced flexibility
• Eye inflammation (uveitis)
• In severe cases, the spine can become fused (bamboo spine)
