We’re all doing our part to stay home and stay safe as we collectively fight the spread of Covid-19. Unfortunately, that means many of the local businesses that are the backbone of our economy are struggling. Local farmers and grocers are helping us to survive through this brutal pandemic. Taking a lesson out of such situation we must understand that locally grown food should be part of our lifestyle essentially (and not just during difficult times) as it has numerous benefits.

1. Locally grown food have nutrition which is required to build immunity according to the needs of season and give us strength to fight seasonal ailments.

2. Locally grown food tastes much better and are much fresher adding value to your dishes.

3. Buying from your local farmers strengthens community, helps economy to flourish and supports local families such as those of farmers’.

4. Local food preserves genetic diversity of the produce, encouraging farmers to grow organically, use less preservatives and fertilisers which in turn benefits everyone to remain healthy.

5. Local food makes a lighter carbon footprint. On an average our food travels about 1500 miles from farm to plate. This requires unnecessary travel, processing, refrigeration, packaging which not only is a sheer wastage of fuel but also increases air, water and land pollution. Purchasing locally grown food is a simple way to address these menacing issues and to create a healthier environment.

So, next time you see a shiny apple with a fancy sticker of some exotic place control the temptation and buy our humble not so shiny locally grown apple. Rather than drooling over Kale from an European market, try the locally grown spinach.
