Cervical spondylitis, also known as cervical spondylosis, refers to the age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal discs in your neck. As the discs dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs). Cervical spondylitis is very common and worsens with age.
Symptoms of Cervical Spondylitis
- Neck pain and stiffness: This is often the most prominent symptom.
- Headaches: Typically starting at the back of the head.
- Pain in the shoulder or arms: This can happen if the condition affects nerve roots.
- Weakness and numbness: In the arms, hands, legs, or feet.
- Difficulty walking or loss of balance: If the spinal cord becomes compressed.
- Grinding sensation: When turning the neck.
